rhombusHi, I'm trying to install the python-gobject package.10:54
rhombussudo doesn't seem to work...10:54
rhombusand when I log into the device as root via ssh and wifi, it's really slow10:55
rhombusand apt-get install fails because apt-get can't lock the dpkg file10:55
rhombusdpkg/lock, sorry10:55
KotCzarnyinstall rootsh ?10:55
rhombusKotCzarny: yeah, I wanted to do that, but it doesn't seem to be in the catalogue10:56
rhombusKotCzarny: I have the Extras repository, so that seems odd10:56
KotCzarnyand if you have ssh working already, just do ssh root@localhost10:56
KotCzarnyto get root10:56
rhombusKotCzarny: ah!!!10:56
rhombusMan, that should have been obvious10:56
rhombusbut why can't I get rootsh?10:56
KotCzarnyand to speed up ssh via wifi, just take down power saving in wifi options10:57
KotCzarnyit's much more convenient to use pc and ssh to n90010:57
rhombusKotCzarny: Where are the wifi options? In Settings?10:57
KotCzarnyby default wifi power saving is at max, which kills ssh interactivity10:57
KotCzarnyyes, it's probably in advanced wjen you edit connections10:58
rhombusKotCzarny: Ok, found it10:59
rhombusKotCzarny: hm. Still very slow. I probably need to restart the connection, yes?11:00
KotCzarnymight be, try11:00
rhombusKotCzarny: so why can't I see rootsh?11:00
rhombusKotCzarny: in the application manager, I mean11:00
rhombusah, good, installing python-gobject is working... sorta. It's hanging at "waiting for headers"... probably the wifi again11:01
KotCzarnyor weird returns from dns11:02
rhombus restarting the interface worked11:02
rhombusit's installing11:02
KotCzarnyturn off power saving temporarily to confirm?11:02
rhombusKotCzarny: power saving is off now (I think)11:03
rhombus*checking*11:03
rhombusargh11:03
rhombusit's on again11:03
KotCzarny:)11:03
rhombusIs that normal?11:03
KotCzarnynope11:03
KotCzarnytry disconnecting11:04
KotCzarnyediting connection, then connecting11:04
rhombusok, it automatically restarted the connection11:04
rhombusmaybe I didn't hit the right button :(11:04
rhombusok, now it shows as off11:05
KotCzarnyfor me intermediate setting is good enough11:05
KotCzarnybut it depends on ap and network quality11:05
rhombusmy AP is suboptimal, it's running OpenBSD 6.2 with an atheros interface. It works, but the driver doesn't support the full range of protocols11:07
rhombusOk, so... the rootsh problem; why am I not seeing this in the program manager?11:08
KotCzarnybecause it's cli program most likely without proper category set11:09
rhombusKotCzarny: but if I choose "all" shouldn't it then appear?11:09
KotCzarnywhich might be intentional11:09
KotCzarnyyeah11:09
KotCzarnyall wont show all11:09
rhombusall won't show all?11:09
KotCzarnynope11:10
rhombusOk - how do I find it, then?11:10
KotCzarnyapt-cache search rootsh11:10
KotCzarny:)11:10
KotCzarnyit's not for regular joe anyway11:10
rhombusah, so I can't install it through the App Manager?11:10
KotCzarnytruly i dont remember11:10
KotCzarnywas long time ago, and havent reinstalled my n900 for many years11:11
KotCzarnyand if you have ssh working, you dont really need it11:11
rhombusKotCzarny: ok. I'll use ssh then. No need to complicate things further.11:12
KotCzarnymake an alias or put a script named rootsh into /usr/local/bin11:12
KotCzarnythat will call ssh line11:12
rhombusok, thanks for the tip11:14
MoeIcenowyI think rootsh is installable in HAM11:49
KotCzarnydo you see it in pkg list?11:49
* KotCzarny is a bit lazy to fire up ham11:50
MoeIcenowyKotCzarny: I used Faster Application Manager to install it12:33
KotCzarnyoh, then it's there, but fam is discouraged, you know?12:35
sixwheeledbeast~hamvsfam12:35
infobothamvsfam is probably https://mg.pov.lt/maemo-irclog/%23maemo.2013-10-28.log.html#t2013-10-28T10:44:33, or http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=9322712:35
KotCzarny~fam12:36
infoboti heard fapman is Faster Application Manager, a frontend for apt which uses own repositories catalog, and shouldn't be used to do system upgrades (like CSSU), or actually for anything since ~speedyHAM. It also does "apt-get autoremove" after every operation, by default. In short, it's been identified as source of system corruption and thus deprecated, or see ~hamvsfam12:36
sixwheeledbeast~speedyham12:36
infobotspeedyham is probably 30 times faster than HAM https://github.com/community-ssu/hildon-application-manager, now included in CSSU.12:36
DocScrutinizer05rhombus: in HAM you got a few option flags in settings menu, one of them makes truly all packages visible13:54
DocScrutinizer05but the canonical method to install CLI progarms (except rootsh, for obvious reasons) is via cmdline by apt-get install <package>13:56
DocScrutinizer05rootsh however must be there when you got the right repos enabled14:01
DocScrutinizer05~pkg14:02
infobothmm... pkg is http://maemo.org/packages/14:02
DocScrutinizer05http://maemo.org/packages/view/rootsh/14:02
MoeIcenowyoh I didn't know fam is so badly reputed15:07
KotCzarnywho knows, maybe it got better15:07
MoeIcenowyso I will choose to use CSSU HAM instead of FAM now15:08
MoeIcenowybut to be honest the main speed barrier here is that at China the speed to access maemo.org is quite slow ;-)15:09
sixwheeledbeast~ham15:33
infobotfrom memory, ham is Hildon Application Manager.  Slow as molasses. Anticipate you got time for a beer or two until it finishes whatever it does, or see ~speedyham15:33
