ashleyk_is there a metapackage that installs things like 'man', or do i just install man all by its lonesome...03:47
ashleyk_seems like i should be installing something even more useful03:47
gnarfaceinfo?03:52
ashleyk_i installed that too, thanks...03:55
gnarfacebe sure to look in /usr/share/doc/[package name] for additional documentation, many packages have stuff in there too03:59
gnarface(stuff other than the licenses)03:59
ashleyk_gnarface, right, i was just suprised it wasnt installed, like i missed something basic05:27
Myst_is_backis there a devuan version of a frenas or mediabox like systemD free06:27
ashleyk_Myst_is_back, hola06:51
ejrhi. i am running ceres. for a while now when running dist-upgrade, apt wants to remove init and sysvinit-core with a big warning about whether i am sure i want to do that. I do not, obviously, since I do not know whether my system will still boot after that upgrade. is this risky upgrade intentional though? should i wait for a few weeks until the dist-upgrade might be less risky?10:00
Evilhamejr: you likely want to wait it a bit, what does apt upgrade say?11:00
fsmithredI need a reality check: If I have a directory that contains a few text files and a few deb packages, and I either zip it or tar it with compression (tried xz and gzip so far), the final compressed archive should be smaller than the source directory, shouldn't it?13:32
fsmithredwhy the fuck does it come out the same size?13:33
sixwheeledbeastStuff that is already compressed will not be reduced in size. A text file is hardly noticeable and .debs are already "compressed"13:36
HurgotronTry to compress them separately. - Only idea I have is that the compression algorithm notices already compressed stuff and switches off13:36
Hurgotronsixwheeledbeast: still should be a few bytes difference at least13:37
fsmithredyeah, in one attempt, the compressed archive was a few bytes bigger13:38
fsmithredoh, there are more debs than I thought13:39
fsmithredI can leave them out. Thanks.13:40
sixwheeledbeastslightly larger is typical if you compress a file that cannot be compressed.13:40
fsmithredmakes sense that there's a little overhead13:45
gouri changed my grub's desktop bg via grub-customizer app and due to incompatibilites of gnucash's ascii version - it should be at least 2.6.19 to be able to read 3.4/3.5 files, for some time i'm going to stay on ceres keeping notice of listbugs & listchanges output14:52
sixwheeledbeastI didn't know 2.6.x was backwards compatible with 3.x14:53
gourfor now i've very nice desktop setup requiring just minor cosmetic changes - adding some plugin, tweaking panel items, re-arranging etc., but everything else is fully functioal, afaict...the only missing thing to is it resume/acquire some admin skills by taking advantage of debian/devuan tools14:53
goursixwheeledbeast: i got reply on the user-list that 2.6.19 can read 3.x files14:54
sixwheeledbeastok they would know better than me. i suppose 3 is running in parallel development14:55
gourahh, forgot...there is one remaining issue - installing of wine16:55
gourboth devuan (debian) and winehq pkgs seems to be broken for ceres...17:25
ashleyk_gour, broken?17:25
gourashleyk_: well, broken deps which are not possible to satisfy17:26
ashleyk_hmm i always built wine from source17:26
ashleyk_so i dont know anything!17:26
goure.g. https://pastebin.com/qhYTcbeu17:27
gourheh, building from src would remind me on my old gentoo days :-)17:27
ashleyk_hmm those errors dont seem that bad17:28
gourwhen i start to add to the list it gets worse17:29
ashleyk_try17:29
ashleyk_apt-get update && apt-get upgrade17:30
ashleyk_i dont see why the uuid would be an issue...for one...17:30
ashleyk_is it because you put :i386?  i dont knmow...17:30
ashleyk_could be17:30
gourotoh, i have several pkgs which not upgradeable, e.g. dash whose update would cause bunch of ther pkgs to be removed17:31
ashleyk_oh well you are using beta distro...17:38
ashleyk_release17:38
gouryeah, migrated from manjaro where i used higher version of some apps (e.g. gnucash) and the ascii versions are too low causing problems in reading newer data17:40
gourwith the official release of buster/beowulf, i'll strongly consider to switch to stable 'branch'17:52
gournow, have no idea how to simply downgrade my data or whether using gnucash from beowulf on ascii would be a good idea?17:53
gourin any case, not having as much time as when I was heating the atmosphere by daily usage of gentoo, i'm leaning more and more towards 'stable'17:54
ashleyk_@_@17:56
fsmithredwhat package has version 2.33.1-0.1+devuan1???18:14
fsmithrednot libuuid1 or uuid-runtime18:14
fsmithredgour, libuuid1 recommends uuid-runtime so maybe try installing without recommends18:16
fsmithredapt-get --no-install-recommends install [packages]18:17
gourfsmithred: i arrive at this: https://pastebin.com/PsGDWmaV18:25
gour"gordian knot"18:25
ashleyk_gourdian18:27
gourlastim time when running debian sid i had similar problem, but then i was able to resolve it with wine pkgs from winehq. now even those do not work and i have a need for a few apps running under wine18:27
gour:-)18:27
fsmithredI don't understand where the 2.33.1-0.1+devuan1 - I can't find it18:33
fsmithred+ ...is coming from18:33
fsmithredI can't see that version, and I have all repos enabled18:34
gourhmm18:35
fsmithredif you run 'apt-cache policy libuuid1' (or libblkid1) can you see that version?18:36
fsmithredit would be the devuanized version of 2.33.1-0.1 which is in buster/sid18:36
ashleyk_why not do a clean install of something stable18:37
gourhttps://pastebin.com/aYKyE5gB18:37
ashleyk_instead of running on a system you fubared18:37
fsmithredOH! it's only i386 that has that version18:37
gourashleyk_: do you think something is wrong with my ceres or in general?18:38
fsmithredapt-cache policy libuuid1:i386 shows the version in question18:38
fsmithred...in general18:38
ashleyk_gour, its for developers18:38
fsmithredceres is not really ready18:38
fsmithrednot even close18:38
ashleyk_that should be obvious as soon as you install it18:39
ashleyk_why go bleeding edge then try to install things like i386 parts for winehq packages18:39
gourok, i got it...when i was running sid it was pretty ok...but then the question is do you recommend to install/use gnucash from beowulf on ascii since otherwise i can't use my GC data?18:39
ashleyk_lol, better luck doing that on stable18:39
ashleyk_i dont know anything about gnucash18:40
ashleyk_i didnt know people actually used that18:40
fsmithredbetter to backport it yourself if you can18:41
fsmithredbb in a few minutes18:41
ashleyk_if you had used stable versions of gnucash probably you wouldnt be in a non portable database....another reason to use stable releases18:42
gourashleyk_: i used gnucash from manjaro's "stable" branch, but that is 3.5, while ceres/beowulf have 3.4 and ascii 2.6.15 and only >=2.6.19 can read 3.x data18:44
gouris it more clear now?18:44
ashleyk_whatever manjaro is18:45
gouryou can read "archlinux"18:45
ashleyk_sounds like that was your first mistake18:45
gourwell, gnome was running fine there, but i moved to xfce and thunar had automounting problem due to some systemd stuff - that's why i'm here now18:46
gourhopefully, that's not mistake ;)18:46
ashleyk_if gnucash is locked into gnome, then you should have never locked your financial data in it in the first place :)18:47
ashleyk_gnome has been on probation since the late 2000s18:47
gourgnucash is not tied to gnome in any way18:48
ashleyk_then it should be easy to build 3.518:48
gourit is just gtk app18:48
gour3.4 from beowulf is also ok, so i wonder if using that on ascii would be reasonable?18:49
ashleyk_perhaps, i dont know...  if you try it, try installing the deps from ascii first and seeing if it will let you dpkg -i the gnucash file18:50
ashleyk_or even nodeps it (however you do that with debian) and see if it will launch regardless of what it thinks it needs18:51
gourok, i'm installing ascii on my netbook and will test there18:51
ashleyk_or, do a proper backport, or just build from source18:51
ashleyk_like if you install all the ascii deps, then just do a build from source, it might get this problem gone18:51
ashleyk_so you can do other things18:51
ashleyk_devuan wont get in your way if you just want to solve a problem manually :)18:53
ashleyk_this works best when a 'make uninstall' exists for later when the repos have the version you want18:54
ashleyk_if you cant be bothered to build your own package18:54
gourwhen doing new install is it enough to select 'devuan desktop environment' at the top or it is required to check 'Xfce' as well?18:57
fsmithredgour, I'm not sure.18:57
fsmithredI would check xfce, but since it's the default, it might get installed wihtout checking it18:58
fsmithredisn't xfce already checked?18:59
gournope, only first item18:59
fsmithredthen you should be able to just press Enter18:59
gourok19:00
fsmithredIf I'm wrong about that, you can install xfce4 when you reboot into the installed system19:01
ashleyk_xfce may be the default, i never use X, but eitherw ay, its not hard to add if its not installed19:06
buZzany idea what could help a system that cant really hibernate with 'echo disk > /sys/power/state' ?19:56
buZzalso 'echo mem > /sys/power/state' doesnt seem to suspend it19:56
gourfsmithred: default does install xfce20:05
gouris it normal that new install has isse with hddtemo's perms?20:06
gour*hddtemp20:07
buZzcould be, whats the issue?20:08
goursensors plugin informs that hddtemp does not have sufficient perms...dirty hack recommended is to change perms with chmod u+s /usr/sbin/hddtemp20:10
fsmithredgour, thanks20:11
fsmithredI just run dpkg-reconfigure hddtemp to set it20:12
fsmithredshould run automatically when you install the package20:12
buZzyeah wonder why it didnt?20:17
buZzgour: you did install it?20:17
buZz/dev/sda: Samsung SSD 850 EVO 250G B              @:  no sensor20:18
buZzboo :)20:18
gourattempt to install gnucash from beowulf would upgrade 98 pkgs from fresh install and install 158 new ones...that's strange20:19
ashleyk_bwahaha :(20:19
buZzgour: sounds like you might need to apt update; apt upgrade your system20:19
buZzdid you install from dvd without internet?20:19
gourbuZz: i did install from dvsd but with internet and after 'update', there was nothing to do20:20
buZzand what does 'apt update; apt upgrade' show you -now- ?20:21
buZzstill nothing to do?20:21
gouryes, when 'beowulf' is not included20:22
gourat least, wine does install cleanly :-)20:22
buZzyes, nothing to do?20:22
gourbut gnucash seemts to be big20:22
gouryes, nothing to do20:22
gourbut if i include 'beowulf', it is a different story20:23
buZzgnucash does have a ton of dependancies20:23
buZzE: Unable to locate package beowulf20:23
buZz ?20:23
ashleyk_i figured its best to install the dependencies20:23
ashleyk_then get the gnucahs .deb file and dpkg -i20:24
buZzashleyk_: yeah it depends on them :P20:24
ashleyk_no instal the ascii ones20:24
buZzwhy would that be better then just using apt, ashleyk_ ?20:24
ashleyk_avoid deps20:24
buZzoh20:24
ashleyk_that will transform your system into beowolf forever20:24
buZzyou're trying to install the beowulf package on a ascii system20:24
buZzyeah that might not end good :P20:24
gouryes, in order to be able to use gnucash with the new data20:25
gourapt stats for gnucash from beowulf: 98 upg, 158 newm 1 to rm :-)20:26
gourthat requires some more thinking...20:26
gnarfacegour: you did you try to build that version against the ascii dependencies yet?20:26
gnarfacesometimes it works20:27
gourgnarface: not yet...will think aobut it tomorrow20:27
gnarfacethat might not mangle your install.  this definitely will20:27
ashleyk_im trying to build it now20:31
ashleyk_installing deps20:31
ashleyk_it has a billion deps20:35
ashleyk_hmm yeah, i think im stuck at gwengui-gtk320:36
ashleyk_only gtk2 is in repo20:36
ashleyk_and qt4 and qt5 and fox1620:36
ashleyk_gnucash 3.5 would be a challenge to run on almost all distros20:49
ashleyk_and normally building things from source is easy, but in this case, its probably easier just to let gnucash destroy your entire distro20:50
ashleyk_maybe they shouldnt make breaking changes to the database structure between minor versions20:51
fsmithredinstall beowulf in a vm just to run gnucash? I've done crazier stuff than that.20:56
gourfsmithred: is beowulf stable than ceres? it should be considering it is approaching stable phase...iirc, buster is supposed to be frozen last month?22:24
gourin that case i could try to just use beowulf...let me try to install wine & gnucash on my testing install22:25
ashleyk_they discontinued gnucash for windows or you could just run windows :P22:29
gourlast version of windows for which i had license (came along with the laptop) was xp. since then i do not have anything with windows...and even before that it was always light usage...before linux os2 way my OS22:32
ashleyk_jsut need wine22:33
ashleyk_so you can get drunk when gnucash doesnt work22:33
gourlol22:34
gouri'm updating my testbed to beowulf to check how it goes with gnucash and wine22:35
fsmithredgour, I think beowulf mostly works, and you will probably have better luck with the versions of your problem packages22:55
fsmithredlibuuid1, etc.22:57
gourwe'll see soon ;)23:01
gourboth wine & gnucash installed ok, will test them tomorrow23:52
