ebisu | Yo, is it possible for me to "upgrade" a debian stable to Devuan | 01:06 |
---|---|---|
ebisu | I'm renting a DigitalOcean box and the only option I have that isn't systemd is FreeBSD and I don't wanna recompile all my crap | 01:07 |
ebisu | And SystemD blows | 01:07 |
gnarface | i think it'll work | 01:08 |
gnarface | ebisu: | 01:08 |
gnarface | getting systemd out might be a pain | 01:08 |
n4dir | i also think that you can install binary packages in FreeBSD (i am rather sure) | 01:08 |
gnarface | but it might also just work | 01:08 |
DonkeyHotei | is FreeDOS an option? just reinstall over that | 01:08 |
ebisu | Im using some specialized stuff | 01:09 |
gnarface | ebisu: i think it's been addressed on the forum? | 01:09 |
ebisu | I dunno man, I use Slackware so I'm not accustomed to all this newage trash | 01:12 |
ebisu | Devuan, Void, Crux and some smaller distros are the only usable distros past that | 01:12 |
ebisu | When doing actual server stuff SystemD makes like hell like it wouldnt for a normal end user | 01:13 |
ebisu | *life | 01:13 |
gnarface | yes, i don't blame you for wanting to ditch it | 01:14 |
ebisu | how hard is it to install bsd init on a devuan install | 01:16 |
ebisu | because that would be ideal for me | 01:16 |
MinceR | afaik bsd init doesn't really work with linux | 01:20 |
MinceR | even slackware uses sysvinit with their bsd-style rc, iirc | 01:20 |
ebisu | yeah I know but I mean that kind of setup in particular | 01:21 |
ebisu | I might just install freebsd and get it all over with | 01:21 |
n4dir | there are quite some init systems in the debian repo though (hence in the devuan repo too). | 01:21 |
ebisu | god DigitalOcean needs more choices | 01:21 |
ebisu | SytemD is satan incarnate but not as cool and doesn't encourage you to smoke weed and listen to Iron Maiden records backwards | 01:22 |
ebisu | End user won't care but it sucks for actual productivity | 01:22 |
ebisu | on a server | 01:22 |
MinceR | it sucks even on the desktop | 01:23 |
MinceR | like when it freezes when it was supposed to shut down | 01:24 |
ebisu | ^ | 01:24 |
MinceR | and when it forgets to start a service or two | 01:24 |
MinceR | or just crashes on boot | 01:24 |
holla | ebisu: what's wrong with: openrc - dependency based init system (runlevel change mechanism) | 01:35 |
ebisu | nothing im just not used to it | 01:35 |
ebisu | Anythings preferable to how assbackwards systemd is | 01:36 |
holla | uh, i just found: openbsd-inetd - OpenBSDs Internet-Superserver | 01:38 |
MinceR | inetd != init | 01:43 |
holla | MinceR: https://i.imgflip.com/4ox14.jpg ;) | 02:48 |
MinceR | holla: http://www.reactiongifs.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/nicholas-cage-you-dont-say.gif | 02:53 |
ServiceRobot | why are y'all spamming outdated memes? | 02:53 |
ebisu | I set up FreeBSD on my box. Thanks for the info anyway. You guys are doing a great thing for GNU/Linux, so keep it up. | 03:23 |
Xenguy | "new age trash" ; loving it : -) | 04:35 |
Xenguy | ebisu: Thanks on behalf of the borg collective | 04:37 |
TurBo_biT | hi all | 09:14 |
TurBo_biT | i come in just to comment one strange bug that i have in all systemd distros, but not un devuan | 09:15 |
TurBo_biT | my laptop is a samsung notebook 9 pro | 09:15 |
TurBo_biT | it has wacom pen and multitouch, its convertible | 09:15 |
TurBo_biT | when install any systemd distros i get all the time ghost touches in the screen | 09:16 |
TurBo_biT | but in devuan don't have any problem | 09:16 |
TurBo_biT | i don't understand the causes, but thats what happens | 09:17 |
DonkeyHotei | this was interesting to skim over: https://busybox.net/kill_it_with_fire.txt | 10:18 |
ErRandir | Interesting yes, but rolling your own init scripts isn't that hard. I've done it to test many different distros. | 11:17 |
xkr47 | gnarface, ok I was successful with apt-cacher-ng. I imported deb.devuan.org + all entries from https://pkgmaster.devuan.org/mirror_list.txt to the devuan mirror list. In my test machine I had pkgmaster.devuan.org used in sources.list, and apt-cacher-ng set as proxy. The test machine successfully redirected the request to one of the mirrors in the set of IPs listed in deb.devuan.org and stored the cached files under... | 11:43 |
xkr47 | ... the "devrep" directory, i.e. regardless of what mirror was requested, they share the same files on disk, saving space. My merge request is here: https://git.devuan.org/devuan-packages/apt-cacher-ng/merge_requests/1 | 11:43 |
xkr47 | I just hope the maintainer of that repo gets notified :) | 11:44 |
xkr47 | interesting keybase stats collected by me: 2/3 VUAs have their GPG keys on keybase. 3/5 caretakers. 0/8 lead developers (of the ones having their gpg key listed on https://devuan.org/os/team/) | 11:46 |
xkr47 | following all of those that I could find now :) | 11:46 |
xkr47 | sorry VUAs -> "core group until 2017" | 11:47 |
xkr47 | (you can search by gpg key hex string in keybase (without the 0x in front)) | 11:48 |
Centurion_Dan | xkr47: noted | 12:27 |
xkr47 | what is? :) | 12:37 |
Centurion_Dan | xkr47: your comment about apt-cacher-ng | 14:30 |
xkr47 | ^^ | 14:49 |
gnarface | thanks for the update xkr47 | 19:07 |
