ebisuYo, is it possible for me to "upgrade" a debian stable to Devuan01:06
ebisuI'm renting a DigitalOcean box and the only option I have that isn't systemd is FreeBSD and I don't wanna recompile all my crap01:07
ebisuAnd SystemD blows01:07
gnarfacei think it'll work01:08
gnarfaceebisu:01:08
gnarfacegetting systemd out might be a pain01:08
n4diri also think that you can install binary packages in FreeBSD (i  am rather sure)01:08
gnarfacebut it might also just work01:08
DonkeyHoteiis FreeDOS an option? just reinstall over that01:08
ebisuIm using some specialized stuff01:09
gnarfaceebisu: i think it's been addressed on the forum?01:09
ebisuI dunno man, I use Slackware so I'm not accustomed to all this newage trash01:12
ebisuDevuan, Void, Crux and some smaller distros are the only usable distros past that01:12
ebisuWhen doing actual server stuff SystemD makes like hell like it wouldnt for a normal end user01:13
ebisu*life01:13
gnarfaceyes, i don't blame you for wanting to ditch it01:14
ebisuhow hard is it to install bsd init on a devuan install01:16
ebisubecause that would be ideal for me01:16
MinceRafaik bsd init doesn't really work with linux01:20
MinceReven slackware uses sysvinit with their bsd-style rc, iirc01:20
ebisuyeah I know but I mean that kind of setup in particular01:21
ebisuI might just install freebsd and get it all over with01:21
n4dirthere are quite some init systems in the debian repo though (hence in the devuan repo too).01:21
ebisugod DigitalOcean needs more choices01:21
ebisuSytemD is satan incarnate but not as cool and doesn't encourage you to smoke weed and listen to Iron Maiden records backwards01:22
ebisuEnd user won't care but it sucks for actual productivity01:22
ebisuon a server01:22
MinceRit sucks even on the desktop01:23
MinceRlike when it freezes when it was supposed to shut down01:24
ebisu^01:24
MinceRand when it forgets to start a service or two01:24
MinceRor just crashes on boot01:24
hollaebisu: what's wrong with: openrc - dependency based init system (runlevel change mechanism)01:35
ebisunothing im just not used to it01:35
ebisuAnythings preferable to how assbackwards systemd is01:36
hollauh, i just found: openbsd-inetd - OpenBSDs Internet-Superserver01:38
MinceRinetd != init01:43

ServiceRobotwhy are y'all spamming outdated memes?02:53
ebisuI set up FreeBSD on my box. Thanks for the info anyway. You guys are doing a great thing for GNU/Linux, so keep it up.03:23
Xenguy"new age trash" ; loving it : -)04:35
Xenguyebisu: Thanks on behalf of the borg collective04:37
TurBo_biThi all09:14
TurBo_biTi come in just to comment one strange bug that i have in all systemd distros, but not un devuan09:15
TurBo_biTmy laptop is a samsung notebook 9 pro09:15
TurBo_biTit has wacom pen and multitouch, its convertible09:15
TurBo_biTwhen install any systemd distros i get all the time ghost touches in the screen09:16
TurBo_biTbut in devuan don't have any problem09:16
TurBo_biTi don't understand the causes, but thats what happens09:17
DonkeyHoteithis was interesting to skim over: https://busybox.net/kill_it_with_fire.txt10:18
ErRandirInteresting yes, but rolling your own init scripts isn't that hard. I've done it to test many different distros.11:17
xkr47gnarface, ok I was successful with apt-cacher-ng. I imported deb.devuan.org + all entries from https://pkgmaster.devuan.org/mirror_list.txt to the devuan mirror list. In my test machine I had pkgmaster.devuan.org used in sources.list, and apt-cacher-ng set as proxy. The test machine successfully redirected the request to one of the mirrors in the set of IPs listed in deb.devuan.org and stored the cached files under...11:43
xkr47... the "devrep" directory, i.e. regardless of what mirror was requested, they share the same files on disk, saving space. My merge request is here: https://git.devuan.org/devuan-packages/apt-cacher-ng/merge_requests/111:43
xkr47I just hope the maintainer of that repo gets notified :)11:44
xkr47interesting keybase stats collected by me: 2/3 VUAs have their GPG keys on keybase. 3/5 caretakers. 0/8 lead developers (of the ones having their gpg key listed on https://devuan.org/os/team/)11:46
xkr47following all of those that I could find now :)11:46
xkr47sorry VUAs -> "core group until 2017"11:47
xkr47(you can search by gpg key hex string in keybase (without the 0x in front))11:48
Centurion_Danxkr47: noted12:27
xkr47what is? :)12:37
Centurion_Danxkr47: your comment about apt-cacher-ng14:30
xkr47^^14:49
gnarfacethanks for the update xkr4719:07
